Today started at off with brillant sunshine and temperatures in the high 50's. I had breakfast at the hotel and left around 8:15. After a mile or so I passed Bowdain College and the home of Joshua Chamberlain. Major General Chamberlain is one of the heros of Gettysburg when as a Col. in the 20th Maine, he was responsible for preventing the Confederate army from capturing the Little Round Top. At the end of the war he was chosen to accept the confederate army's surrender. I have been an admirer of Gen Chamberlain for sometime and it was a pleasant surprise to stumble onto his house. I was too early to go through the house. I continued on and eventually started to climb. The same as yesterday, the day started out with major climbing for the first 40 miles or so. It was harder today, in fact I came upon a hill that was so steep that I could not climb it and had to walk. It was at least a 45% grade and may have been more!!! In Freeport, I met a young couple going the same direction as I was. They had also started in Bar Habor where she is from and they are on their way to Philadelphia where he is from. They are camping rather than staying in motels.
I saw more sports cars today. It seems like everyone in Maine has one. I saw several Fiat Spyders, like I used to own, an MGA, which I used to own and a MGTD which I wished I owned. exciting for car fans.
I kept passing old cemetaries from the late 1700's and the early 1800's. I read one tombstone where the poor parents had buried three small children over the course of 10 years or so. Very sad!
I also am seeing old houses built in the mid to late 1800's. One old mansion was obviously owned by a mill owner. It was the Clark mansion built in 1896 in Clark Mills. There is obviously a story but I was getting too tired to stop and see what it was all about.
People keep asking me why I do rides like this and there are lots of reasons but one is the ability to eat a bowl of Rocky Road ice cream with hot fudge everyday and not gain weight!!!!
On to a new state tomorrow,

On to a new state tomorrow,
Rocky Road, yummmmm! Chris from the tour told me about mixing lemonade with any soft drink to make it more refreshing, now I'm hooked.

Norbert, I didn't know you were a JLC fan. He's big here in Gettysburg, and my friend Mike Nugent, who lives in Wells, Maine, gives a great tour of his home at Bowdoin (sp?) College
