I woke up early today in my tiny little cabin, probably because I went to bed at 9:30PM. I was in not hurry to get started so I watched a little weather channel and tried to organize my gear. After I took a shower and got my cycling clothes on I looked out the window and it was pouring rain. It was just like last summer's ride!! Rain!!. I got out my rain jacket and got ready to set out to eat breakfast if nothing else. It had stopped by the time I got on the road at 7:45 headed for Bar Harbor. It was a pretty good shoulder for the first 8 miles or so although the traffic was much heavier than I expected. I mean it is an Island for crying out loud. Where could everybody be going? Anyway the last two miles were very tough. There was no shoulder and the traffic was just as heavy. At the 10 mile mark, I had my first flat of the trip. It doesn't seem fair. This year I have on heavy tires, the same tires that two of my companions last year had one flat each for 4,000 miles and I get one at mile 10!!! Anyway it, I changed, without tire irons I might add, but I couldn't find anything in the tire. It must have been a pinch flat caused when I re-inflated my tires yesterday. I managed to get to Bar Harbor and found it to be a very touristy town but I found a guy to take my picture at the official starting point for my trip. After breakfast, I rode out two the Acadia National Park. It was very nice. They have 50 miles or more of something called carriage paths. Only hikers, horses and bikes are allowed to use them. John Rockefeller spent a good deal of money to create them. They are constructed of crushed limestone and are a lot of fun to ride. I rode around Eagle Lake and when I came out I realized that the Acadia Park was the way to bypass the bad part of Rte 3 into Bar Harbor. I went back to Bar Harbor and had lunch at a restaurant where President Obama had dinner. I asked my waitress if she had seen him but she wasn't working at the time. I asked what he ate and she said a 2lb lobster. I said she should have lied and said he ate what I had for lunch!! After lunch I rode back to the motel for a total of 41 miles. Tonight, I am going to eat lobster, just like Barack! Tomorrow I head South!
