I got a fairly late start today, not getting on the road unil 9:00AM. I immediately realized that I had not used my trailer piled as high as it was. I had pulled it with the weight but not with the center of gravity as high as it was. After a couple of miles, I got used to it and didn't have any problems with the trailer. The other thing that I noticed immediately was a scraping sound coming from the bike. It sounded like something on the front wheel. I stopped several times trying to ascertain what it could be but could find nothing. I saw a restaurant after a mile or so and decided to have breakfast there as well as to use their paved parking lot to figure out what the problem was. I dismounted and decided to push the bike across the highway due to the heavy traffic. As I pushed the bike I realized the sound was coming from the rear wheel and not the front. I again gave it a very good look and found that the bracket which holds the fender in place had come loose. I re-did and problem was solved! After a good breakfast, I proceeded down Rte 1 on my way to Belfast. The traffic was heavy but I had a decent shoulder. Eventually I turned off Rte 1 and onto a little country road with no traffice. Now I was able to enjoy the Maine countryside. I passed fields that were just covered with granite boulders. I have no idea how they were able to farm these fields in the old days. I passed several old cemetaries and I can't imagine how they can dig graves with all that granite in the ground. After 15 miles I was back on Rte 1 & 3 but now there was a 6' shoulder that was in great shape. As I was getting close to Bucksport, I could see rain clouds developing. I stopped for lunch and when I came out a cloudburst popped up. I ducked under a gas stations overhang and figured I had cheated the rain gods! Not so fast there sorry biker, after about another 2 miles the skys opened up with a real gully washer. I was soaked. I was worried about all of my stuff in the trailer but realized that there was nothing I could do about it so I just kept going down the road. Eventually the rain stopped with me having about 10 miles to go. I passed through the town of Searsport which is pretty old and full of antique shops. I was starting to run out of gas and just wanted the motel to show up. It di d and I checked in about 3:30PM. It is nice. I cleaned the bike and am going to bed early as tomorrow is a 80 mile day and I am going to start at 7:00AM.
