Matamoras to Easton PA 65 miles - cum 672 miles

Today was a gorgeous late summer/early fall day, the temperature started out at about 55 degrees and then warmed up into the mid 70's. After a lot of thought, we decided to change our route from going south down the river roads in New Jersey to staying on the Pennsylvania side and continue towards Easton via Route 209. This route went right through the Delaware Water Gap National Park. After a few miles, we came to the small town of Millford Pa. it had some interesting buildings so we stopped to take a few pictures. We came upon an old cemetery and stopped to look around. While we were there, A man pulled up in his truck and walked up to see us and asked us if we knew that a famous Indian was buried there. He said that Chief Thunder Cloud was buried in the cemetery. Thunder Cloud supposedly was the model for the Indian Head nickel.
Meiri and I left the cemetery and headed down Rte 209. Eventually we came to a road closed detour ahead sign. The detour was a road that went uphill so we continued on to see if we could get through anyway. Eventually we came to a bridge that was being re-built. We also noticed a biker on the other side who was coming our way. He said that there was a crossing in place so we went for it. it consisted of a couple of ladders with planks laid on the ladders. Our new friend came over then Meiri and I took our bikes apart and portaged everything across. Our biker friend recommended that we cross over to the New Jersey side of the Delaware river and go down to Easton on that side as it would be easier. We got our bikes put back together and continued on down to the Delaware Water Gap. It was a gorgeous ride with a lot of views of the river and folks canoeing down the Delaware. We got on I-80 with the intent of going over to the New Jersey side but after we went about a mile we saw that there was no shoulder as we approached the bridge sidewalk. We didn't want to risk riding on the roadway of I-80 so we went back to our original plan of following Rte 611 into Easton. It was a little hilly but a nice road with good shoulders. We got into Easton about 6:30pm. Tomorrow, John Boyle is going to come to Easton and ride down with us to his house where we will spend the night. I am finally going to take a rest day on Monday!!!!
