Wilmington NC to Myrtle Beach SC 72 miles - Cum 1,423 miles

We got up this morning to a cool gloomy day. At least it wasn't raining. We headed out about 8:00AM and were a little surprised about the amount of traffic that was already on the roads. We entered the old section of Wilmington and began to see some very old buildings and houses. I guess my theory of the Union forces burning all of the older buildings in the south doesn't apply to Wilmington. There are many houses and churches with historical backgrounds. It looks like someone could spend a week just looking at all of the civil war points of interest.
We crossed the Cape Fear river by way of a huge draw bridge. Draw bridges always have an open steel grate which makes the crossing a little tricky. The thin tires of the bike tend to fall into the grates and makes it very squirrelly. We made it across and started down Rte 17 towards Myrtle Beach.
After awhile it became obvious that we were not going to get the nice tailwind we had yesterday. The wind today was out of the Northwest and we were going primarily Southwest with a lot of West legs. At least it wasn't a headwind. It really wasn't a bad ride although it wasn't as flat as yesterday either. We had gentle rolling hills that went up and down around 30'to 50', certainly nothing that was as challenging as Connecticut!!!
Bob's new shoes started to bother him after a few hours. That is definitely a problem buying new shoes and breaking them in on the fly so to speak.
We began to pass golf courses that I have played on my many trips to Myrtle Beach. It was nice to be on familiar roads after all of these days. I had to take a few pictures of the courses just to prove that we were here. Eventually we made it the the South Carolina state line.
As soon as we hit South Carolina, the shoulder became non-existent. We rode in the slow lane and the cars had the fast lane. It seems to work out pretty well. After we passed Little River, we left Rte 17 and made our way to the ocean in Cherry Grove and then rode down Ocean Blvd into North Myrtle Beach. Bob began to get tired of me saying " I stayed at that place, I stayed at that place and I stayed at that place." He said later that when we get to Daytona, he is going to do the same thing to me.
We got into the motel around 4:00PM, took our showers but before Bob took his shower, he decided to check the air in his tires. But unfortunately, before he used my pump, he insulted my pump. My pump always takes revenge for insults. The pump pulled the valve stem out of his tire so he had to change inner tubes before he could take a shower. I hope Bob has learned his lesson because I don't think he has very many tubes with him.
We went to dinner at Benjamin's Calabash seafood buffet. It was a lot better than I expected. They had a pretty nice variety of seafood and some other things as well. They claim to have 125 items on the buffet. We didn't go overboard with out selections and did point out other folks to each other who probably shouldn't be eating there at all.
Oh well tomorrow we are off to Georgetown SC. It should be a short day, only 45 miles or so.
