Williamston to New Bern NC 63 miles - Cum 1268miles

Bob and I were excited to get up this morning after spending two nights in Williamston cooling our heels. The weather channel had said it would be 73 degrees and sunny. We got up looked outside and saw RAIN!. How could that be? The weather channel is never wrong. We got dressed and walked up to the restaurant for breakfast. After breakfast, we walked back to the motel in the cold drizzle. We were very disappointed. Nevertheless, we packed up and started down the road to New Bern. It was drizzling when we left but we did have a nice tailwind and were cruising along on a mostly flat road doing about 15mph. The miles flew by but we soon started to see the signs of the flooding yesterday.
We crossed the Pamlico River as we left Washington NC. Bob pointed out that this was the original Washington as it was incorporated in 1776 before Washington DC. Old town Washington looked like it would be a pretty neat place to hang out, at least it did from the other side of the river.
We were following Route 17 when all of sudden the southbound lanes were closed to traffic because they were re-constructing the roadway. The good news was there were no workers so we literally had the road to ourselves for several miles. It was disappointing when the road turned into two lanes again.
We continued to see signs of the flooding. We came to a portion of the road that had cars that were caught in the flooding. It was obvious that we would not have been able to ride through the flooding yesterday. Check out the picture with the car almost entirely underwater. I think it looks like a Corvette. One section of the road had flooding across the southbound lands that we could not get through today. We had to go over to the northbound lanes to get around the flooding.
In Vangeboro, there was still considerable flooding and we came across a home that had been flooded and they were trying to get their furniture out. As we saw all of the flooding, we again congratulated ourselves on our decision to stay put yesterday.
We made very good time and arrived in New Bern around 2:30PM. We are staying in the Candlewood suites. They have a fully equipped kitchen in the room and a free laundry. Bob and I really needed to do laundry.
We cleaned the bikes, did our laundry and walked across the street to the Harris Tweeter grocery store to buy our dinner and breakfast. We chose frozen dinners and frozen breakfasts to do in the Microwave plus a couple bottles of wine. We went to the self service checkout line. We scanned our purchases and I knew we had some sale items which required a shoppers card. Bob wanted to push the button that said that we had no card but I said to wait. I asked another shopper if she had a shoppers card that we could use. She said no and Bob was embarrassed that I was asking. I then asked the employee who worked that area if she had a card and Bob was further embarrassed. She said that she didn't have a card but we could get one almost immediately. Much to Bob's consternation, I filled out the application while the employee scanned our new card which saved us $4.00. Bob payed and started to leave when the employee said not to forget our groceries. Bob was on his way without them. I laughed for which I am ashamed but I couldn't help it. Bob probably won't talk to me for the rest of the night!!! Just kidding, he already is!
Tomorrow we head for Surf City and the beach!!! We might even get some sunshine!!!!!
