Georgetown to Charleston SC 71 miles - Cum 1,537

Today started off crisp but very sunny. Bob and I got away from the motel around 8:00AM heading south on Rte 17. There was a fair amount of traffic in Georgetown but it soon thinned out and we enjoyed the next 50 miles or so traveling through the South Carolina low country. We probably went from 30 feet about to sea level to 0 feet above sea level 20 times. The highest hill we climbed were the bridges over the North and South Santee rivers. Although we didn't see any log trucks today, they farm the pine forests here like the corn fields in the Midwest. Most of the trees grown around here are going to the pulp mills. We passed several large forests and facilities owned by the paper mills. We saw several deer in the forests as we stopped at various times. They were too far away to get good pictures. Some of the live oak trees were pretty spectacular with the moss hanging from them.
We continued on Rte 17 with light traffic making good time. We had 42 miles in by noon when we stopped for a snack in an closed up bar and restaurant. Further down the road, we came to the community of Mt. Pleasant and stopped at a deli for lunch. By this time, it was around 1:30 and the last ten miles was in fairly heavy traffic. Finally we came to the Ravenel Bridge which crosses the Cooper river. This bridge looks pretty new and is about two miles long. Once we were stopped at a traffic light and a man spoke to us from his car. He said to enjoy the bridge. he said the views were spectacular. He was right. It was a pretty steep climb to get to the center of the bridge and we had to stop several times both to rest and to take pictures. This bridge rivals the Golden State Bridge in San Francisco for it's views. If you ever get a chance to see it, it will be worth the trip.
As we finished crossing the bridge, we were on the route that took us into the historic part of Charleston. First we came to the market district which was full of old buildings many of which, have been converted into restaurants. We talked about finding one to eat but it was only 3:30PM and we didn't want to eat in our bike clothes. We left the market district and started down the road past some very old homes. They were all wonderful to look at and we wished we could visit them all. Charleston is another place to come and spend a week touring!!
We got to our motel around 4:00PM after crossing another bridge but it wasn't very exciting and we could not stop.
Bob and I had dinner at the IHOP tonight.
Sorry Jaime but your grandfather wasn't very funny today!!!!!
